Frequently asked questions
Please see our floor plan below. The Giant White Infinity Cove, Giant Blackout Set, Brick Set, Pulse Lounge and Roundtable Set are also accessible when you book this space.
A giant green screen is a large coloured backdrop used in film and video production to replace the background digitally. This process is known as chroma keying. During filming, the green background is separated from the subject in post-production and replaced with an image, video, virtual environment or visual effect.
Green is commonly used because it is significantly different from most skin tones, making it easier for editing software to isolate the subject. A well-lit green screen can therefore give filmmakers considerable creative freedom without having to physically build or travel to every location required for a production.
The Giant Green Screen at Finchley Studios provides a professional environment for film, television, commercials, music videos, corporate productions, virtual backgrounds and visual effects, with the space designed to accommodate larger productions and more ambitious camera setups.
The Giant Green Screen at Finchley Studios is particularly well suited to productions where the background needs to be replaced or enhanced digitally. This includes film and television, commercials, advertising campaigns, music videos, corporate productions, virtual production, visual effects and branded content.
Its large scale also makes it suitable for productions involving multiple people, vehicles, props, furniture and camera movement. Rather than being restricted to a simple talking-head setup, you can use the available space to create much more ambitious compositions. If you already know what you want to achieve, contact us before booking and we can help you determine whether the Giant Green Screen is the right environment for your production.
Yes. The Giant Green Screen is suitable for filming cars and other large vehicles, making it a useful option for automotive commercials, product launches, promotional films and visual effects work. The space is on ground level and has a broad shutter gate entrance, making vehicle access and offloading straightforward. There is also sufficient room to accommodate cameras, lighting and production equipment around the vehicle.
If you're planning a vehicle shoot, please tell us what you're bringing when you book. We can discuss access and your production requirements in advance to help make sure the space is prepared appropriately.
Yes. The Giant Green Screen is an excellent choice for commercial and advertising production, particularly when you want complete creative control over the finished background. Green screen allows your product, talent or vehicle to be filmed in a controlled studio environment and then placed into a digitally created or filmed environment during post-production. This can be particularly useful when a commercial requires locations, environments or visual effects that would be difficult or expensive to create physically.
From automotive advertising and product commercials to branded campaigns and visual effects, the Giant Green Screen can provide the controlled filming environment required for professional commercial production.
The green screen needs to remain a consistent chroma-key colour during filming if you intend to remove it digitally. However, professional lighting can be used to create different effects around the subject, while the background can be digitally replaced with virtually any colour or visual environment during post-production. If you don't actually need a green background for your production and want to film against a specific physical colour, we have other studio options available. The Giant Blackout, Brick Studio and Giant White Infinity Cove can provide very different visual styles, and we may be able to accommodate other colour requirements too. If you have a particular colour or visual effect in mind, contact us before booking. Tell us what you're trying to achieve and we'll help you identify the most suitable studio and setup.
If you need a blue screen or another coloured background, please contact us before booking. Green is the standard chroma-key colour, but the most suitable background depends on your subject, wardrobe, props and the effect you're trying to create.
If you simply want a particular colour as the finished background rather than needing chroma key, you may prefer one of our other spaces. The Giant Blackout, Brick Studio and Giant White Infinity Cove can each create a very different aesthetic, while other colour requirements may be possible depending on your production. Tell us what you're looking to achieve, including any colour references, visual examples or technical requirements, and we'll help you find the right solution.
Yes. The Giant Green Screen provides space for set builds, props, furniture and production equipment, making it suitable for productions that need more than a simple green backdrop. This can be particularly useful when you need to combine physical elements with a digitally created environment. For example, you might build part of a room, vehicle interior or branded set in front of the green screen and replace the remaining environment in post-production.
If you're planning a substantial set build, please discuss it with us before booking. Details such as dimensions, materials, props, vehicles and equipment will help us advise on the most suitable arrangement.
Hiring the Giant Green Screen at Finchley Studios gives you access to a range of facilities designed to make your production comfortable and efficient. Depending on your booking, you can make use of the private green room, kitchen and production area, as well as Wi-Fi, printing facilities, an HMU (hair and make-up) area and an accessible bathroom. The facilities also include air conditioning and heating.
For refreshments, we provide a coffee machine, a selection of teas and free mineral water. The studio environment is designed to support professional productions from arrival through to filming, with space for your crew, talent, equipment and production requirements.
The Giant Green Screen is located in the Brick Studio at 22–23 Arcadia Avenue, Finchley Central, London N3 2JU. Our Giant Blackout, Giant White Infinity Cove, Brick Studio, Pulse Lounge and Roundtable Set are also accessible when you book this space.
Yes. You are welcome to bring your own cameras, lighting and production equipment to the Giant Green Screen.
In Finchley Studios' terminology, this would typically be a Silver Package or dry hire booking. These bookings generally provide the soundproof studio space and a complimentary lighting setup, although you are also welcome to bring and use your own lighting equipment. A Finchley Studios technician will be present throughout the booking for practical assistance, security and insurance purposes. Your own production team can operate its cameras, lighting and other equipment.
If you have a specialist equipment list or complex technical requirements, please share these with us before booking so we can help you plan the production.
Yes. Finchley Studios can provide experienced technical production support for Giant Green Screen shoots. With Gold and Platinum Package bookings, we provide 2–3 senior technicians who can handle cameras, sound, lighting and studio setup, as well as remote calls and livestreams where required. This allows your team to concentrate on the creative direction and talent while our technicians manage the technical production.
Teleprompter (autocue) support is also available upon request, which can be particularly useful for scripted commercials, corporate films, presentations and other planned performances. For a Silver Package or dry hire, one Finchley Studios technician remains present throughout the booking for practical assistance, security and insurance purposes. They do not operate the production as part of the dry hire service.
Yes. The Giant Green Screen is a soundproof studio, making it suitable for productions where recorded audio is important as well as those focused primarily on visual effects. This makes the space useful for commercials, film and television, interviews, corporate productions, scripted content and other video projects requiring controlled audio. The combination of a large green-screen environment and soundproofing means you can create a controlled filming environment without being limited to productions that will have all their audio replaced in post-production.
Yes. Although the Giant Green Screen is particularly useful for video and film production, it can also be used for photography where a chroma-key background is required. Photographers can shoot subjects, products, vehicles or groups against the green background and replace it digitally during post-production. This can be useful for advertising photography, creative campaigns, composites, promotional images and visual effects. If your photography doesn't require chroma key, you may also want to consider our Giant White Infinity Cove, which provides a seamless white background and is particularly well suited to clean commercial photography.
Yes. Green furniture, props and set pieces can be used as part of a chroma-key production, provided they are intentionally incorporated into the production design. Because anything matching the chroma-key colour can potentially be removed during post-production, green furniture can be used to create effects such as disappearing objects, invisible furniture and other visual effects.
If you require green tables, chairs, apple boxes or other furniture and props, please tell us exactly what you need when booking. We can discuss the available options and help you plan the setup around your intended effect.
Yes. The Giant Green Screen can be used for interviews, dialogue and other spoken-word productions, particularly when you want to replace the background or create a virtual environment. The soundproof environment helps provide a controlled setting for recorded dialogue, while the large green-screen area gives you considerable flexibility when designing the final visual composition.
With the appropriate package, we can also provide professional cameras, microphones, lighting and technical production support, allowing you to create a complete audio and video production.
Yes. The Giant Green Screen can be used for livestreams and live video productions, including branded broadcasts, virtual events, interviews and live presentations. With Gold and Platinum Package bookings, our senior technicians can manage the cameras, sound, lighting, setup and livestream requirements as needed. This can be particularly useful when the production involves multiple cameras or a more complex technical setup.
If you're planning a livestream, please tell us when you book. Providing details about the platform, number of participants, cameras and format allows us to prepare the appropriate production setup.
Yes. Teleprompter (autocue) support is available upon request, making the Giant Green Screen suitable for scripted productions where presenters or performers need to deliver prepared content naturally. An autocue can be particularly useful for commercials, corporate videos, educational content, presentations, promotional films and scripted performances. If you need an autocue, please mention it when booking so that we can prepare the appropriate setup for your production.
The Giant Green Screen is designed for productions that need significantly more space and flexibility than a conventional green-screen setup. It is particularly useful when you need room for vehicles, larger sets, multiple performers, substantial lighting rigs or dynamic camera movement. It is also a soundproof production environment, allowing you to record professional audio alongside your green-screen footage.
If you're planning a production where scale, camera movement or set design are important, contact Finchley Studios before booking. We can discuss your requirements and help you determine whether the Giant Green Screen is the right space for your project.
A professional green screen studio can give you enormous creative freedom, but good preparation is essential for achieving a clean chroma key. The most common mistakes usually involve lighting, subject placement, wardrobe and production planning.
Uneven lighting is one of the biggest problems. Shadows, hotspots and inconsistent exposure across the green screen can make it harder to remove the background cleanly in post-production. The screen should be illuminated as evenly as possible, while the subject should be lit separately to create good separation from the background. Standing too close to the green screen can also cause problems. It can create shadows and unwanted green spill around the edges of your subject, particularly around hair and reflective surfaces. Where your production allows, creating distance between the subject and the screen helps produce a cleaner key.
You should also avoid green clothing and props unless they are deliberately part of the visual effect. Anything that closely matches the chroma-key colour can potentially disappear when the background is removed. If you need green furniture, costumes or props for a specific effect, tell us when you book so we can help you plan the setup.
Another common mistake is not considering the final background before filming. The perspective, lighting direction, camera movement and shadows in your replacement environment should work with the footage you capture on the day. Thinking about the finished composite beforehand can save significant time during editing.
Finally, don't underestimate the importance of communicating your requirements before the shoot. If you're bringing a vehicle, building a set, using specialist equipment, filming a large group or requiring particular camera movements, let Finchley Studios know in advance. Our team can help you plan the space and technical setup around your production.
