Your First Podcast Studio Session in London: What to Expect

Your First Podcast Studio Session in London: What to Expect

Your first podcast studio session will usually move through a brief, technical checks, recording and wrap-up, followed by the agreed file handover or editing work. You do not need to learn the recording controls if you book an engineer-led package. Your main preparation is knowing what you want to discuss and helping your guests understand the format.

This guide describes a practical way to approach your first session at Finchley. The exact sequence depends on the production and package; confirm any particular requirements before the day.

Before you travel: know which booking you have

Check your set, support level, start and finish times, and address. Finchley's main studio address is 1 Dollis Mews, Finchley Central, London N3 1HH. The Finchley Warehouse is at 22–23 Arcadia Avenue, Finchley Central, London N3 2JU. Send guests the address for the space actually booked.

The main studio is a short walk from Finchley Central station on the Northern line. Allow a travel buffer, but agree any early studio access in advance. Arriving in the area early does not automatically give you additional time in the recording room.

For Dialogue and Lounge bookings, Gold includes a senior engineer running cameras, lighting and sound; Silver is studio-only hire. If you want technical operation handled for you, check that your selected package provides it.

Start by explaining the episode

Have a short conversation with the person operating the recording before the main take. Explain who is speaking, what you want to record and what the material is for. Mention any prepared introduction, guest name that needs careful pronunciation, or section you intend to record separately.

You can keep the brief simple:

We are recording a host-and-guest interview. We want the main discussion first, then a short introduction once we know the strongest points. Our own editor will assemble the episode.

That gives everyone a shared plan. Agree how to signal a pause and when the main recording should finish.

Expect to speak during the sound check

A sound check works best when you use your normal speaking voice. Try answering an easy question in full rather than quietly saying “testing” once. It gives the operator something closer to the volume and rhythm of the actual conversation.

Once your microphone is positioned, stay reasonably consistent in how you sit and speak. If you need to move it, ask the operator. Avoid tapping the table or handling noisy objects while someone is talking.

For a filmed session, camera and lighting checks are part of preparation too. Say if a seat or position feels uncomfortable before the shots are settled. The aim is to find an arrangement you can maintain naturally.

The Dialogue Set offers a setting for two to four people. If you prefer a lounge-style discussion with up to five people on camera, explore the Lounge Set.

During recording, focus on the person in front of you

For a conversational interview, listen to the answer rather than preparing the next question throughout it. An outline helps you return to the main subject without reading every line from a script.

Give guests room to finish. Constant spoken agreement can make it harder to hear their words; a nod can work when you do not need to interrupt. If you want the guest to explain an unfamiliar term, ask them as you would in an ordinary conversation.

What if you make a mistake?

You can pause and say the sentence again. Leave a clear gap before restarting and tell the operator what you are repeating. If editing has been arranged, note the correction so the editor can identify the intended take.

A small slip does not always require restarting the whole episode. Decide whether it changes the meaning, disrupts the conversation or can be corrected with a short pickup. A “pickup” is simply a line recorded again for use later.

Before leaving, agree what happens next

Check that you have recorded the planned opening, closing and any essential corrections. Confirm who should receive the files and what the next stage of the project is.

Dialogue and Lounge Gold and Platinum packages list cloud delivery within three days and a 30-day post-shoot backup. This refers to the recording files. A completed episode has its own editing scope and delivery schedule, which you should agree through Finchley's editing service if needed.

When the files arrive, download them, check that they open and keep your own copies. Build time for editing and review into your launch plan.

Your first visit does not need a complicated production brief. A clear topic, prepared guests and the right support level give you a useful starting point. Book your first Finchley studio session and tell the team what you want to create.
