How Long Should I Book a Podcast Studio For?

How Long Should I Book a Podcast Studio For?

Book enough time for setup, the conversation, breaks, retakes and wrap-up—not just the intended episode length. For a first filmed interview, a three-hour planning window gives you room to build a realistic schedule. It is an example to discuss with the studio, rather than a universal requirement or a promise of how much content you will finish.

Start with the work your session needs, then confirm the minimum duration and available booking options for your chosen Finchley set through the booking page. A short episode can still require substantial preparation; a familiar setup may be quicker to run.

Add up the tasks before choosing a slot

A useful planning calculation is:

Studio time = setup and checks + recording + breaks and changes + wrap-up + contingency.

Recording time can be longer than the finished episode because you may repeat an introduction, pause to check a fact or remove a section later. Setup includes more than switching on equipment: participants need to settle into their positions and check that they can comfortably see their notes.

Contingency is a small reserve for things that take longer than expected. Keep it separate from planned tasks so it remains available when needed.

An illustrative three-hour interview schedule

Here is a planning example for one host and one guest aiming for a finished episode of around 45–60 minutes. It assumes a straightforward filmed conversation, prepared content and no major set changes.

Time within the booking Planned activity Minutes
00:00–00:30 Settle in, confirm the brief, position speakers and check sound and camera shots 30
00:30–01:40 Record the main conversation, allowing for pauses and restarts 70
01:40–01:50 Take a break 10
01:50–02:10 Record introductions, closing lines and any corrections 20
02:10–02:40 Review outstanding needs, confirm handover details and pack away 30
02:40–03:00 Contingency 20

These timings are suggested allowances, not Finchley service standards. Move time between tasks to suit the brief. If the main conversation needs more than 70 minutes, increase that allowance before deciding how long to book.

What makes a session take longer?

More speakers or new guests

Each participant needs an appropriate seat, microphone position and camera coverage. A panel also needs a clear host to manage turns and keep the discussion moving.

Finchley's Dialogue Set is designed for two to four people, while the Lounge Set accommodates up to five on camera. Choose for the total number of speakers, then allow time for the people involved to get comfortable.

Changes to the look or format

Changing clothes is one task; moving furniture and resetting camera shots is another. Put each intended change on the schedule. If you need props, logos or a different visual arrangement, send the details in advance so the studio can assess the work.

Early access is not a substitute for booking setup time. The Dialogue page asks clients to arrange it in advance because another production may be using the room immediately beforehand.

Remote contributors and scripted sections

If someone will join remotely, agree the connection and recording workflow before booking and include time to test it. A prepared script also benefits from a read-through, particularly when names, numbers or specific wording must be correct.

Do not assume that a ten-minute finished presentation will take ten minutes to capture. Rehearsal and repeated takes belong in the plan.

Can you record several episodes in one visit?

Yes, but plan the transitions as carefully as the episodes. A shared setup can reduce repeated preparation, while changing guests still requires a fresh check of seating, microphones and shots.

For illustration, two 45-minute conversations need 90 minutes of conversation time. Adding 30 minutes for initial setup, 20 for a break and guest change, 20 for corrections, and 20 for wrap-up already brings the plan to 180 minutes—with no contingency. That arithmetic is a reason to discuss a longer slot, rather than assume three hours will fit every pair of episodes.

Include breaks that suit your guests and host. The practical limit is the amount of focused conversation you can sustain, as well as the time available in the room.

Plan your finish as well as your start

Finchley states that overtime is billed at time and a half. Agree a realistic end time and do not rely on being able to extend on the day.

For Dialogue and Lounge Gold and Platinum bookings, cloud file delivery is listed within three days. Your schedule therefore should not assume you must wait for all footage to copy to a personal drive before leaving. If you need an on-site handover, arrange it first and allow the time advised.

Once you have a draft schedule, choose your Finchley studio and recording package. Share the number of episodes, speakers and planned changes so your booking gives the conversation enough room.
