A customer case study podcast works best when the guest explains a real problem, the decisions taken and what happened afterwards. Build the interview around evidence and experience, rather than asking for a stream of compliments. Agree permissions and factual checks before recording so the resulting story is usable and fair.
Choose a case with a clear decision
Look for a situation the intended audience will recognise. Establish what the customer was trying to achieve, which alternatives they considered and what made the decision difficult. A modest, well-explained improvement can be more useful than a large percentage with no context.
Ask who can speak about the work and who must approve disclosure. Some customers may describe the process but not commercial figures or other organisations. Use the guest briefing guide to explain themes, attendees and planned uses without scripting every answer.
Ask for the sequence, not the slogan
Prepare questions that reveal how the work happened. What was the previous process? Where did implementation become difficult? What did the team change? What would the guest do differently next time?
BBC Academy distinguishes factual, personal-experience and analytical interview purposes. Choose which purpose each part of this conversation serves. Avoid asking a customer to support a claim they are not in a position to verify.
Check the evidence behind results
For every numerical result, establish the measure, baseline, period and relevant limitations. Distinguish an observation from the guest's interpretation. Keep the supporting information with the production record, and ask a qualified person to check technical or specialist claims.
CAP's advertising rules require evidence for objective claims and address the authenticity of testimonials. A customer's positive opinion does not remove the need to check factual marketing claims.
| Interview stage | Useful prompt |
|---|---|
| Before | What problem was the team experiencing? |
| Decision | Why did you choose this approach? |
| Implementation | What needed more work than expected? |
| Result | What changed, measured over which period? |
| Reflection | Who would this approach suit, and where are its limits? |
Agree the boundaries of reuse
Explain whether the recording will become a full episode, a written extract, paid advertising or short promotional videos. Confirm the use of names, logos, screenshots and customer data separately where necessary. Our guest release guide helps organise that discussion.
If a review stage is agreed, specify whether it concerns factual accuracy, confidential material or final approval. Give the editor one consolidated response and retain the meaning of the original contribution. Removing an important qualification can change an otherwise accurate statement.
Give the story a useful ending
Close with what the listener can learn, including mistakes and conditions that mattered. Plan distribution alongside the company podcast strategy, and connect a product-specific follow-up to a launch episode only where it adds relevant detail. Let the customer's experience remain the centre of the case study.
Planning this at Finchley Studios
The Dialogue set provides a filmed-conversation option at Finchley for two to four people. Share the customer count, interview outline and any proposed product visuals before the session.
Ask the team to confirm the camera plan and required file handover, especially if an agency will edit the case study later. Supply approved names, logos and a list of terms or numbers that need checking. Agree who will collect customer permissions and consolidate review comments. A professional set supports the interview, while your producer remains responsible for substantiating claims and respecting the customer's disclosure limits.
