A company podcast needs a clear reason for its audience to return. Begin with a specific listener, a recurring problem and a format your team can sustain. Decide how the show will help the business after establishing what it will give the audience; an extended company announcement rarely supplies an entire editorial plan.
Choose one audience and one useful promise
Describe the intended listener more precisely than “our customers”. An operations manager evaluating suppliers needs different conversations from a graduate exploring a career. Write a promise you can test: “Each episode explains how a small team solved one practical delivery problem.”
Select topics that demonstrate that promise across several episodes. Include questions that customers or colleagues actually raise, rather than filling the calendar with the people most readily available. Our six-episode planning guide turns that editorial direction into a recording schedule.
Assign ownership before choosing equipment
Name the person responsible for guest selection, preparation, approvals and publication. Decide who can resolve a factual disagreement or reject an unsuitable promotional extract. A studio can support recording without taking over those editorial decisions.
Set a review process with one person consolidating feedback. Separate essential factual corrections from changing preferences, and agree when the version is approved. Allow for staff absence and busy contributors instead of assuming every department will respond immediately.
Build a format around real conversations
For a pilot, consider one host, one contributor and one main question. A short recurring section can provide consistency without forcing every interview into the same answers. BBC Academy recommends defining the purpose of an interview before choosing the guest.
Test your opening, handovers and closing action in a podcast pilot. Review whether the show works for someone who knows little about your organisation. Explain internal acronyms and provide examples that stand on their own.
Agree what success would look like
Choose a small set of measures tied to the show's purpose. A recruitment series might support useful candidate conversations; an educational customer series might help people understand a difficult decision. Downloads alone cannot answer every business question.
Google Analytics documents campaign parameters for identifying referred website traffic. Where your organisation uses appropriate analytics, agree consistent links and review the resulting visits alongside other evidence. A tagged visit is one signal, not proof that the podcast caused a sale.
| Planning decision | A useful output |
|---|---|
| Audience | A description of the person and problem served |
| Editorial promise | One sentence explaining the recurring value |
| Production | Named owners and a realistic recording cycle |
| Distribution | Chosen destinations and accessible supporting material |
| Review | Evidence and a date for deciding what changes |
Commission a repeatable recording plan
List the episode, clip, audio and caption outputs you can maintain. Include preparation, editing and approvals in the budget. Use the business podcast review guide to decide when to continue, adjust or pause the format using the evidence collected.
Planning this at Finchley Studios
Finchley's CEO set is presented for executive and corporate content, with engineer-supported recording in its Gold package. That provides a relevant production option once your audience and format are clear.
Send the team your pilot brief, participant count and intended outputs. Confirm the set, equipment, technical roles and editing scope against a written quotation. Ask about a repeatable setup for later episodes without assuming a series discount or reserved dates. If your own marketing team will publish the programme, identify its delivery requirements before recording so the studio handover fits the workflow.
