How to Interview a Quiet or Nervous Podcast Guest

By Finchley Studios

A quiet podcast guest often needs a clearer invitation to speak, a more specific question or a little more time. Start by checking what would make the session workable for them. Avoid treating a short answer as a personality diagnosis or trying to force a performance that does not suit the person.

Make the recording understandable in advance

Explain the subject, audience, approximate conversation length and who will attend. Tell the guest whether the programme is recorded or live and how any agreed review will work. BBC Academy identifies those practical details as part of an interview briefing.

Use our guest briefing guide to prepare a short, usable note. Ask whether the guest would like an orientation call or a look at the set. Discuss access or communication requirements privately and pass on only the information needed to make the session work.

Ask one concrete question at a time

Begin with a situation the guest knows. “What happened when you first tried that approach?” provides a different starting point from “Tell us everything about your career.” Allow an answer before adding a second question.

Listen for a detail worth exploring: a decision, an obstacle or an example. If an answer is brief, ask for that detail instead of repeating the same broad question more loudly. A useful follow-up might be “What did you do next?” rather than “Can you say more?”

Leave room for the answer

Do not fill every pause with your own story. Maintain an attentive posture and give the guest a moment to gather their thoughts. If they seem unsure about the question, offer a clearer version rather than interpreting silence as agreement.

The first-interview guide helps a host keep track of the outline while listening. Avoid repeatedly telling a guest that their answer is too short; focus on the useful material you want to understand.

When this happens Try this response
The answer is general Ask for one recent example
A term is unclear Ask how they would explain it to a newcomer
The guest loses their place Pause and restate the question simply
The guest wants to correct something Agree a clean pickup without making it an event
The topic feels uncomfortable Offer a pause and follow the agreed boundaries

Remove avoidable technical distractions

Allow time to settle into the chair, adjust the microphone and understand headphones or camera cues. Shure's recording guidance explains how room noise and microphone position affect speech capture. Let the engineer resolve those details so the guest is not managing equipment while finding an answer.

Keep observers to the agreed number and explain who is listening. A short practice response can familiarise the contributor with the setup without rehearsing the entire interview.

Edit with the same respect you used in the room

Keep the guest's meaning and necessary qualifications. Use pickups to clarify important wording, and avoid cutting pauses so aggressively that a thoughtful answer sounds abrupt. Confirm any promised review step before publication.

The companion guide to talkative guests covers the opposite pacing challenge. Both approaches begin with a clear purpose and a host who responds to the person, rather than applying the same conversational technique to everyone.

Planning this at Finchley Studios

Finchley's Lounge set offers a seated conversational setting and engineer-supported Gold recording. Tell the team if a contributor would benefit from extra orientation time or a quieter arrival routine, then confirm what can be arranged.

Send the guest count, observer list and any practical adjustments before the session. Ask the engineer to explain microphone and headphone setup in simple terms, and agree a pause signal with the host. Build settling-in and pickups into the booked schedule. Choose the set for the actual contributors and production needs; a photograph alone cannot establish somebody's comfort or access requirements.
