How to Record Podcast Intros, Outros and Sponsor Reads

By Finchley Studios

Record podcast intros and outros as purposeful parts of the episode, not as generic announcements added without a plan. The opening should explain why this conversation matters; the close should help the listener understand what to do next. Sponsor reads need their own approved wording, commercial identification and version control.

Give each section one job

An episode introduction identifies the topic and reason to listen. A guest introduction supplies the details needed to understand the contribution. A closing section can summarise an idea and offer a relevant next action without repeating the entire discussion.

Use the structure guide to decide where these pieces belong. Avoid introducing promises that the actual conversation does not deliver. If you record the opening before the interview, leave time to update it after learning what the guest actually said.

Write wording that can be spoken naturally

Read the script aloud and remove long constructions or unnecessary titles. Check names, pronunciation, links and dates before the take. Autocue recommends familiarising yourself with the script and reading it aloud.

Keep prompts in the presenter's speaking style. If exact wording is necessary for a commercial or compliance reason, identify that passage clearly and agree who approves any change. Do not let an improvised paraphrase quietly replace an essential qualification.

Keep sponsor reads recognisable

CAP's advertising rules require marketing communications to be identifiable. Make the commercial context clear where needed rather than relying on a change in background music to explain it.

Obtain approval for the claim, offer, destination link and publication period. If a promotion expires, decide how it will be handled in an episode that remains available. Distinguish a recorded sponsor segment from a separate ad-insertion or hosting service; those arrangements need their own specification.

Asset Information to keep with the take
Episode intro Episode number, topic and approved guest credit
General show intro Series version and intended reuse
Outro Next action, destination and any date dependency
Sponsor read Approved script, campaign and validity period
Pickup Replacement wording and the version it supersedes

Match the delivery to the episode

Keep the microphone position and general vocal delivery appropriate for the surrounding material. Ask the engineer to check a saved sample. A separately recorded section should not sound unexpectedly detached simply because the presenter changed position or pace.

Use the retake guide to label alternatives and select the preferred version. If music is involved, commission its use and clearance through the licensing workflow rather than assuming a familiar track can be added.

Record reusable material deliberately

A solo host may benefit from recording related sections in one prepared block. Keep dated offers separate from evergreen wording and allow enough space for the editor to assemble the sections.

Before wrapping, check that the closing action still matches the destination you will publish. Give the editor scripts and take selections together so an old name, date or commercial version does not survive into the release.

Planning this at Finchley Studios

Finchley's CEO set offers a presenter-focused option, and its Platinum package includes a teleprompter. Discuss whether that arrangement suits your intro, closing or sponsor material before choosing the booking.

Send approved scripts and pronunciation notes in advance. Agree the time needed for separate reads and pickups, and ask which editing or versioned exports are included in the quote. Identify one approver for sponsor wording and any dated offer. Recording a read is different from arranging advertising distribution, so keep those responsibilities clear in the production brief.
