A recruitment podcast should help a candidate understand the work and decide whether to explore an opportunity. Choose specific employee experiences, explain the realities of the role and give listeners a useful next step. A polished conversation is most valuable when it answers questions the audience cannot resolve from a vacancy title.
Choose a candidate question for each episode
Examples include how a junior employee learns, how a team handles a demanding project or what a working day involves. Select contributors who can describe the experience directly, rather than asking every guest to speak for the whole organisation.
Use a consistent structure: the role, a real example, what was difficult and what the guest learned. Connect the programme to your company podcast strategy so there is a clear audience and owner.
Keep participation voluntary and informed
Tell employees where the recording and extracts may appear. Explain whether the material is public recruitment marketing or an internal programme. Give people a practical route to decline or discuss restrictions without putting them on the spot in front of a camera.
ICO's consent guidance discusses power imbalances and the need for freely given consent. Ask your appropriate adviser to confirm the lawful basis and privacy arrangements rather than assuming an employee release settles every issue.
Ask for examples that reveal the job
Useful prompts include “What surprised you during your first month?” and “Tell us about a decision you made on a recent project.” Ask contributors to remove client details or personal information that should not be public.
Prepare managers for a discussion that may include challenges as well as successes. If every answer must describe the company as perfect, the programme is unlikely to help a candidate assess a real working relationship. Our executive interview guide helps organise senior contributors without turning the session into a sequence of speeches.
Check promotional statements
Verify role descriptions, working arrangements and any claims about progression or benefits with the responsible team. Distinguish an individual's experience from a promise applying to every future employee.
CAP's rules address the genuineness and accuracy of testimonials used in marketing. Keep the meaning of the contribution intact when creating short extracts, and retain the agreed permissions described in the guest release guide.
| Candidate needs to understand | A useful episode prompt |
|---|---|
| The work | What did you actually do on a recent assignment? |
| Support | Who helped when you encountered a new problem? |
| Expectations | What would you want a new colleague to know? |
| Development | Which skills have you practised in this role? |
| Next step | Where can candidates find current information? |
Plan for accuracy after publication
Link to a maintained careers page rather than relying only on a vacancy that may close. Assign an owner to review dated information and handle a contributor's concerns about later use.
If a conversation also serves employees, commission the internal version separately where its content or distribution differs. Avoid publishing internal-only material simply because it sounds useful in a recruitment edit.
Planning this at Finchley Studios
The Pulse Lounge is presented for interviews and group content, with up to five people on camera. Tell Finchley the actual contributor and observer count so the team can assess framing and room arrangements.
Share the episode purpose, approved credits and any restrictions before the session. Ask for the recording and edit outputs needed by your careers website and social channels, including accessible versions where required. Confirm who will gather employee permissions and consolidate review comments. A carefully prepared studio discussion can support the recruitment story while keeping participation and final employment information under your organisation's control.
