Structure a podcast episode around one clear promise to the listener, then arrange the conversation so each section advances it. A useful outline identifies the opening, the main points or story beats, the evidence and the ending. It should guide the host without making the guest sound as though they are reading a questionnaire.
Write the promise before the questions
Describe the value of the episode in a single sentence. For example, a founder interview might explain how a company handled one difficult hiring decision. That is more useful for planning than a broad label such as business success.
Choose the opening material that makes the subject clear quickly. Spotify's performance guide discusses early audience drop-off and introductions. Use that principle to review your own opening, rather than assuming a particular hook guarantees attention.
Decide whether the programme follows a story through time, explains a problem in stages or compares different views. Moving between these approaches without clear transitions can leave the listener unsure where the discussion is going.
Build an illustrative episode map
| Section | What it needs to do | Host's preparation |
|---|---|---|
| Opening | Establish the question and its relevance | One concise introduction |
| Context | Supply necessary background | Names, definitions and verified dates |
| Main discussion | Develop the central example or argument | Themes and possible follow-ups |
| Challenge | Explore limits or a competing explanation | A fair question and supporting evidence |
| Ending | Deliver the takeaway and next step | A clear closing prompt |
This is an adaptable example. A comedy discussion or personal narrative may need a different sequence. Pair it with a realistic episode length, then mark which sections are essential and which can be shortened.
Turn the map into a studio run of show
The episode outline describes the programme; the run of show describes how the session will happen. Add soundcheck, recording start, breaks, pickups and the point when the team must finish. Record who gives time cues and who can approve a change to the plan.
If you plan inserted clips, slides or sponsor messages, list the file, its owner and how it will be introduced. An editor needs to know whether a pause marks an intentional insert or an interruption. Prepare a clean version of any material required on set and confirm the playback arrangement in advance.
Choose which lines genuinely need exact wording. A scripted introduction can sit alongside a flexible interview. Our format planning guide helps decide where a script is helpful.
Preserve the structure in the edit
Keep timecoded notes for factual corrections, unclear answers and useful transitions. Check that removing a section does not leave a later reference unexplained. Give clips enough surrounding context to represent the conversation fairly.
For longer videos, chapters can help navigation after publication; YouTube documents the chapter requirements. Chapters work best when they reflect genuine sections. Finish by checking that the episode delivers its opening promise, rather than simply following every item on the original outline.
Planning this at Finchley Studios
Send Finchley Studios both the episode outline and the recording schedule. The CEO Set advertises engineer-supported recording. Use the brief to confirm which elements the engineer will capture and which will be added later.
If the programme includes a direct-to-camera opening, multiple conversations or separate promotional lines, identify those blocks before the session. They can affect camera framing, notes and the schedule. Agree playback or prompting requirements individually rather than assuming the standard setup includes them. A clear run of show lets your host, producer and recording team work towards the same finish time, with specific time reserved for the pickups that the editor needs.
