Background noise often becomes most obvious when a speaker pauses. Traffic, ventilation, electrical hum and handling sounds can all compete with speech, so the most effective approach begins before recording.

Identify where the sound enters
Outside noise may travel through doors, windows and ventilation routes. Mechanical vibration can also pass through a building's structure. These problems differ from the reflections that make a room sound echoey.
Listen with the room operating as it will during the session, including necessary ventilation and equipment. A brief silent visit is less useful than a realistic microphone test.
Improve the capture
Place each microphone to favour its speaker and maintain a consistent distance. The useful relationship is between the direct voice and unwanted sound; microphone type alone does not determine the outcome.
Keep phones silent, avoid tapping the table and choose quiet ways to refer to notes. If a temporary disturbance interrupts an important answer, pause and repeat the section while the participants are still available.
Use processing with realistic expectations
Filtering and noise reduction can help with some unwanted sound. They can also change the voice, especially when noise overlaps the speech. A gate may reduce sound between phrases without removing it underneath the words.
Ask the recording team to capture room tone where useful and keep track of interruptions for the editor. Preventing a problem at the source usually leaves more options than relying on restoration afterwards.

How Finchley Studios handles this
Finchley's studio offering includes spaces designed for spoken-word recording and engineer-supported packages. Discuss the selected room and any concerns about ventilation or neighbouring activity before booking. During a supported session, raise unwanted sounds promptly so the recording team can assess the source and whether a pickup is needed.
