A podcast episode should be long enough to deliver its promised value and short enough to avoid unnecessary repetition. Choose an initial length based on the format and the material, then revise it using audience feedback and your own production results. There is no single duration that suits every interview, explainer or entertainment show.
Start with the episode's job
A focused answer to one practical question needs a different shape from a detailed personal story. Write down what the listener should know or feel at the end, then identify the material needed to get there. If two strong but separate subjects compete for space, consider two episodes.
Use a target range while planning rather than demanding the exact same runtime every week. The audience benefits from a predictable experience, but padding a short interview adds little. Spotify's episode performance guidance explains how retention can help identify sections that lose listeners.
An illustrative length calculation
Imagine an educational interview with this proposed final edit:
| Component | Planned duration |
|---|---|
| Opening and guest context | 2 minutes |
| Explanation of the problem | 6 minutes |
| Main example and follow-ups | 12 minutes |
| Practical takeaways | 7 minutes |
| Closing information | 1 minute |
| Total | 28 minutes |
These are planning numbers, not an industry benchmark. If the example turns out to be thin, a shorter episode may be stronger. If it reveals an essential complication, leave room to explore it and shorten another section if appropriate.
The episode structure guide helps turn this outline into a workable conversation. Decide how tightly the programme will be edited before treating its planned final runtime as a booking estimate.
Recording time is a separate budget
A 28-minute finished episode may need a longer conversation, followed by pickups. The studio booking also needs to accommodate setup, soundcheck, breaks and the agreed wrap process. Different hosts and guests work at different speeds, so an untested first episode deserves room for adjustment.
If your chosen format requires a large amount of cutting, include the editor's time in the budget. A shorter published episode is not automatically cheaper to produce. Our scripted and unscripted format guide explains how preparation changes the work before and after recording.
Review comparable episodes
Compare episodes with similar subject matter and audience expectations. Note where listeners leave, but also listen to those moments yourself. A drop might relate to a long introduction, an unclear explanation, an advertisement or a change of topic. One small audience's graph is a prompt for investigation, rather than proof of a universal attention span.
For filmed episodes, compare the video experience too. YouTube recommends putting full episodes in the podcast playlist, so keep your full programme distinct from promotional excerpts. Test a specific change, such as shortening the introduction, and record what you changed before comparing later results.
Planning this at Finchley Studios
When booking Finchley Studios, describe both the expected finished episode length and the amount of recording you want to capture. A package name alone does not establish how many edited episodes fit your session.
If you are considering the Dialogue Set, send an outline with the number of guests, planned breaks and pickup requirements. Ask Finchley to confirm the appropriate session duration and current minimum for that set. Agree editing scope and the target runtime with whoever will finish the programme, especially if your recording is expected to be substantially longer than the published episode. For several episodes, allow for guest changeovers instead of adding final runtimes together.
