A live podcast and an edited episode have different technical needs. Streaming prioritises a dependable real-time programme, while recording should preserve useful source files for a later release.
Keep the live output and recording plan distinct
The outgoing stream is a compressed programme containing the selected camera angles and audio mix. If that is the only file you retain, a missed camera cut or interrupted connection may also affect the archive.
Where the production requires it, separate microphone and camera recordings give the editor more choices. Ask which sources will actually be captured, rather than assuming that a streaming system automatically saves every input.
Rehearse the full signal path
Test the microphones, graphics, camera changes, guest connections and destination account before the audience arrives. The network connection needs enough dependable upload capacity for the selected stream, alongside any other traffic.
Someone should monitor the outgoing programme as well as the local recording. A camera can appear correct in the room while the destination receives the wrong audio or an outdated graphic.
Agree a contingency plan
- Decide what the host should do if a remote guest disconnects.
- Prepare a holding image or a clear pause procedure.
- Identify who controls the stream and who can stop it.
- Confirm how the later edited release will be assembled.
Live broadcasting also changes the editorial workflow. Corrections that could be removed from a recorded episode may already have reached the audience, so brief speakers and approve on-screen material beforehand.
