A hybrid podcast combines people in the studio with contributors joining remotely. The aim is to make conversation comfortable while capturing files that can be edited into a consistent episode.

Plan listening and recording separately
The connection used for conversation may be different from the files used in the final edit. A remote recording platform can capture media locally while sending a lighter feed for live communication, depending on the chosen system.
An important audio consideration is mix-minus: the remote guest hears the studio participants without receiving a delayed return of their own voice. Incorrect routing can make speaking difficult and create echo.
Prepare the remote contributor
Ask the guest to use headphones, a suitable microphone and a quiet, furnished room. Test the actual device and network they will use on the day. Check permissions, camera framing and power before the paid studio time begins.
Make sure the studio participants can hear and, when needed, see the remote guest comfortably. If everyone is staring at an inconvenient screen, the conversation and camera framing may suffer.
Agree the backup and handover
- Identify who will send the guest their joining instructions.
- Test how the team will communicate if the main link fails.
- Confirm whether remote and studio sources are recorded separately.
- Keep the guest connected until local uploads have completed.
- Tell the editor how all sources should be assembled.
Hybrid recording is more than putting a laptop on the table. The platform, routing, participant support and file handling should be agreed as one workflow.
